What is SOHO?

What does the acronym SOHO stand for? Who operates this mission? What is the purpose of this mission and what information have we gathered as a result of it?

SOHO stands for Solar Heliospheric observatory. It is a spacecraft launched jointly by ESA and NASA. The main purpose of launching SOHO is to get the real-time information about the sun. SOHO moves around the sun 24 hours a day and continuously sends the pictures and other information to the earth. Scientists use this information and pictures to understand more about the sun and its nature. So far SOHO has discovered 2100 comets. SOHO has helped scientists to predict the solar activity. It has provided scientists with detailed and precise measurements of the temperature structure, the interior rotation, and gas flows in the solar interior.
